The National park of Los Haitises has an exuberant natural beauty, amazing landscapes, and a large bio-diversity with countless types of birds and vegetation. It´s located in the northeast of Dominican Republic, framed in the same bay of Samaná. The surface of the park is 631 km² located in three province of Dominican Republic. Which are Hato Mayor, Monte Plata and Samaná. The open area of common use of the park is situated in the community of Sabana de la Mar by Caño Hondo zone, The word: Haitises comes from the Arawack voice thar was the language used by the Tainos the ancestor inhabitants of the island, the meaning is high lands or land of mountains, the hills that are called colinas or "mogotes" by the local people are in a range of 30 and 40 meters high. A very important aspect is the geomorphological formation of karst stones, compact rocks that enroll among many things in the bio-diversity we find, a great system of huge caves, such as the Cave of the Sand or cuevas «de La Arena», or Saint Gabriel Cave «Cueva de San Gabriel» and the Railroad line Cave «Cueva del Ferrocarril» it is also known by the great amount of pictographs, lowrelieves and carvings.

This is a round blue water lake that invites you to swim in its fresh clear wáter, connect yourself with the natural freshness of the place. Caño Hondo is a small river surrounded by humid sub tropical Mangroove forests, red mangroove that grow only in brackish wáter and this vegetation help the park to produce about 2000 milimeter of rainwater per year. It is situated in Sabana de La Mar, a community of Hato Mayor province, we depart from Las Terrenas and pass by Sánchez town, a fishing village with a history of glory and power in the begining of the XIX century, then we drive to Las Garitas where we take the boat to go to Los Haitises, once we are in the park we visit the Bird Island, and the caves, at the end of the journey we have lunch at a fantastic place called Altos de Caños Hondo, an ecological hotel and restaurant in the middle of nowhere with incredible natural swimming pools and a two lines zip line (zip line is not included in the tour price.)
